Samuel Herman Store and Residence (82)

415 4 1/2 Street, SW
Constructed in 1866, demolished

Cluss's account book for July 1, 1866 shows an "unsettled account" against Samuel Herman. In the same month, the Evening Star reported that Samuel Herman was just "finishing a large and beautiful store and dwelling", but the article did not mention an architect.

Samuel Herman emigrated in 1855 from Hesse-Darmstadt. His wife emigrated from Bavaria. He started a retail business by 1864 on Four and a Half Street, and remained in the dry goods business until the loss of his houses ca. 1900.

In the same neighborhood, Cluss also designed another project for Samuel Herman only a few years later, (97), a house / store combination for Joseph P. Herman, (96), and Jefferson School.
