C. A. Schneider Residences (81)

1908-1910 I Street NW
Constructed in 1885, demolished

Charles A. Schneider, a German immigrant, owned an iron foundry in Washington and invested in real estate such as these two I Street properties that Cluss and Schulze designed. Cluss had known Schneider for many years. Schneider's foundry had provided the wrought iron roof structures used in the Patent Office, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Museum. In 1881, Schneider also invested in the 1800 block of G street NW. Though he obtained a building permit for a three-house row designating Cluss and Schulze as architects, the houses were not built.
