John M. Young Store and Residence (75)

475 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Constructed 1879, demolished 1941

This store and residence building on prestigious Pennsylvania Avenue was the first of three building designs commissioned by Cluss and Schulze for John M. Young, carriage builder and real estate investor. It was one of several small buildings demolished by 1941 when the District of Columbia built a new central library building on the site.

Cluss and Schulze also designed Youngs carriage shop at 475 C Street NW in the block behind the Pennsylvania Avenue building (in 1885), and a Seventh Street row of stores and residences in 1883.
